[About:]
Another early Zadoc and Dark Cloud collaboration which appears to follow Dark Cloud's tendency for writing lyrics with positive messages.

In the early days of the band, this song was often the closing number.

[Notes:]

  • The guitar part was inspired by a similar chord pattern in the bridge of Iron Maiden's "Powerslave".
  • This song spent a lot of time missing from the band's set mainly due to the band being unable to figure out a fitting arrangement. It left the set in 1995 and didn't appear again until 2002.
  • It has also the longest span between recordings, having been initially released on the band's first available demo "Blood and Rain" in 1993 and not appearing again until 2007's "Tragically Ever After".
  • The band's first demo "Blood and Rain" is titled after a line from this song.
  • Recording engineer Steve Lloyd told the band in 1993, "If there was a fire and you could only save one of these songs, this (meaning "No More Goodbyes") is the one you should save."
  • The prominent keyboard arrangement was added by Ambrosia in 2002, which Zadoc considers to be her finest contribution to the band.
  • It's also one of Ambrosia's favorite songs.
  • The addition of the spoken word and laughing children heard on "Tragically Ever After" was producer and recording engineer Scott Patnode's suggestion. The band thought the idea was really creepy and loved it.
  • Zadoc's wife Courtney does the spoken word at the end of the song. Each line she speaks addresses and "answers" the previous songs on the album.
  • Although a live version of "Twisted" follows this on "Tragically Ever After", the band considers this the final song of the album, with "Twisted" being simply a bonus song.
  • Zadoc has always felt the lyrics to this song were inspired by the song "Something About You" by Boston - notably the opening line "When I was younger, I thought I could stand on my own" in comparison to No More Goodbyes, "When I was younger, I thought I knew...so now I stand on my own"
  • In the original arrangement the song ended with a guitar solo, of undeterminate length before a final chorus would end the song. During rehearsals in these days, Zadoc would often annoy rhythm guitarist Kirk Brinley and bassist Jeff Densmore by stretching out the solo and making it longer than usual. Once they voiced how annoyed they were, Zadoc would thereby get his amusement from making the solo even longer at the next rehearsal.

When I was younger I thought I knew...
But my memories faded as I grew,
So now I stand on my own
To face this life alone

You know, sometimes we all fall down,
And it seems like there's no-one around,
To lead us on our way
On this path we've gone astray

You play the game to win,
You stay away from sin,
You cry your tears of blood and rain
To wash away your pain...

Nights spent in darkness, child,
And you can't see...
As the mist clears from your eyes
There'll be no more goodbyes

The rainbow of light shines on,
And the rain that fell is now long gone
To a place where evil lives,
To a place no-one forgives
