[About:] A song about the corruption and abuse of power and its weilder feeling divination, yet aware of the vulnerability of mortality.
Despite being laid out as a metaphorical story, it is about all people who revel in the power of status and/or authority and revel in outcasting other people outside of their group or social circle. [Notes:]
- The title of this song is taken from the infamous line of the Queen of Hearts from Lewis Carrol's "Alice in Wonderland" series
- The lyrical subject matter was actually inspired by the state of the band in the late 90's under the direction of Dan Gober.
To Zadoc it felt like a bizarre kingdom in which undesirables were "outcast" and disassociated from which all required Zadoc's approval on their "death warrants". Zadoc considers these years to be the most unpleasant in the band's history. - The music is inspired by Bruce Dickinson's "The Chemical Wedding".
- A common misunderstanding with the songs lyrics is that it is often thought that the choruses are identical, when in fact the pronouns change each time, before reverting back to 'Off with "Her" Head' in the outro. The succession of pronouns is as follows: "their" heads, "her" head, "his" head, and finally "her" head again.
- The lyric "the axe and the maces clash" is an homage to Iron Maiden's "Invaders" and the line "Axes grind and maces clash"
- The album cover of "Beyond Our Eyes" was dubbed depicting the "fields of tomorrow" mentioned in this song, thereby making a fictional parallel between this song and the song "Beyond Our Eyes" taking place in the same "world".
This connection thereby furthers the Lewis Carol influence with a life size chess board running through the "fields".

Became a God tonight,
To claim the throne that was due to me The time for a new God to grow...
And raise His hand...to STRIKE!
The axe and the maces clash,
Strike the blow to the one who opposes Me The fear as the blood runs red
Off with their heads!
Off with their heads,
Rolling skies and the fields of tomorrow
God needs a field to rule,
A path through the garden of light to pass God needs a palace green, God takes His queen
God's queen shall serve Him well,
Drop the blades on the traitors who worship Him God's queen is filled with greed...
Off with her head!
Off with her head,
Rolling skies and the fields of tomorrow
God prays to a field of a dream...
The warlords approach from the south gate To crush all of God's dream with lies...
Is this My end?
The axe and the maces clash,
To take what is rightfully Mine to take God falls and the blood runs red
Off with His head!
Off with His head,
Rolling skies and the fields of tomorrow |
